Congratulations to our Coastal Habitat Restoration Project Team on their amazing progress with the hatchery!
The team has been rearing oysters and clams and filling shell bags at this location for use in the project's living oyster reef. The reef will add much needed habitat for marine life as well as provide additional wave attenuation in an effort to reduce erosion of the shoreline.
This makes the first time in approximately 30 years that oysters have been spawned on Shinnecock territory.
The Coastal Habitat Restoration Project is funded by the Department of the Interior through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Hurricane Sandy Coastal Resiliency Competitive Grant Program .
